MOLDOVA - NEW EXPLOSIONS IN TRANSNISTRIA

 Filenews 7 May 2022

The authorities in Transnistria, Moldova's pro-Russian breakaway region, announced that last Friday night there were four explosions.

The explosions took place at an old airport in a village located on the border with Ukraine, with no casualties.

"Near the village of Voronkovo in the Ribnica district, at the point of the old airport, there were four explosions," Tansnistria's "interior ministry" told Telegram.

"On the evening of May 6, at about 9:40 p.m., two explosive devices were fired by a drone. An hour later the attack was repeated," the same source clarified, stressing that there were no casualties.

The village of Voronkovo is located about 5 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

The region has seen various incidents in recent days, such as shootings near a weapons depot and a series of explosions, raising fears of the current conflict spreading to Transnistria in Ukraine.

"A team of investigators is at the scene," the ministry clarified in its statement, adding that this is "the second attack in Voronkovo. The first was noted on 5 May", when "two bombs were dropped by drone" without any casualties.

Transnistria seceded from the state of Moldova after a brief civil conflict in 1992. The enclave, with a population of 500,000, is almost entirely dependent on Moscow, which provides free gas and has deployed a force of 1,500 soldiers there.

In recent weeks, fears that the conflict in Ukraine would spread to Transnistria have intensified after a Russian general said the Russian invasion was aimed at creating a corridor to this pro-Russian region.

For its part, Kiev accused Russia of wanting to "destabilise" Transnistria in order to justify a military intervention.
