INTENSIVE POLICE CHECKS ON MOTORISTS 4-10 MAY

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions. Tragically characteristic is the statistic of the last three years in Cyprus, according to which almost one in four fatal road collisions, have as their main cause the consumption of alcoholic beverages or the use of drugs before driving.

With the aim of protecting the public, preventing and reducing road collisions on our roads, the Police announces the intensification of checks to identify drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The intensified controls will last from 4 to 10 May 2022 and will be carried out 24 hours a day, throughout the road network. Particular emphasis will be given during the midnight hours of Friday and Saturday, where the phenomenon of driving under the influence of alcohol most often occurs.

At the same time, increased checks to identify drivers driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will also be carried out in European countries, as part of a Europe-wide campaign, under the auspices of the European Roadpol Police Traffic Police Network.

At the same time as the controls for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, police checks continue for the rest of the traffic offences. As always, particular emphasis is placed on those offences which are the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions, such as speeding, the use of a mobile phone while driving and the non-use of a seat belt and a protective helmet.
