The Council of Ministers today approved the Wage Protection (Amendment) Law and authorized the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, acting minister of labour and social insurance, to submit the relevant bill to the House of Representatives.
The Bill, which was prepared following the instructions of the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Mrs. Zeta Emilianidou, aims at strengthening the protection grid in order to effectively ensure the basic right of employees' wages.
The most basic and extremely important innovation is the establishment of a legal obligation of the employer to pay the salary in a bank account of the employee's choice. In this way, transparency and the ability to control and document both the employment relationship and the payment and the amount of salary paid are ensured. The only exception concerns cases where, according to a collective agreement, the frequency of payment is made weekly at the workplace.
In addition, an obligation is introduced to agree in writing between the parties involved any cut-off of the employee's salary and the employer's obligation to issue and inform the employee about a monthly / weekly payslip, as well as the possibility of convicting directors and other company officials for these violations.
