A detention order for a period of 8 days was issued today by the Judge of the District Court of Limassol against a 56-year-old Greek, who was arrested in the case of 6.5 kg of cocaine. The suspect faces the offences of conspiracy, import, possession, possession for the purpose of supply to other persons and money laundering.

The 56-year-old was taken to Court today without being represented by a legal adviser and did not bring objections to YKAN's request for his detention.

According to the facts, on May 24, 2022, YKAN received information that in three pallets containing paper packages with glues that were in a specific container, there were quantities of drugs.

From the examinations that took place, it was found that this container arrived from the port of Piraeus to the port of Limassol on the same day (24/5) with the ship "ALASA" and with a recipient of a specific company owned by a wanted person.

In boxes with A4 glues the huge amount of cocaine

After search warrants were obtained, the container was searched the next day, which was taken to a warehouse for unloading.

During the investigation, three pallets were found which had boxes with A4 glues and in which they located the quantity of 6.5 kg of cocaine.

Then controlled delivery was made and the packages of drugs were received and replaced with dummies, while the warehouse was placed under guard.

Yesterday the pallet with the effigies of the drugs were delivered to the 56-year-old in a warehouse in Limassol which had been rented by the owner and recipient of the cargo. Upon delivery of the drugs, the suspect was stopped by YKAN members and then after the warehouse was searched, he was arrested.

He thought it was expensive cigars, said the 56-year-old in question.

Interrogated, the 56-year-old said he initially met in Athens with a person who told him to pick up the pallet in question in Cyprus for a fee.

As he claimed, he knew that on the pallets would be hidden duty-free expensive cigars weighing 6 kilograms. He also said that upon his arrival in Cyprus, he met with another person (wanted 2) who explained to him how to pick up the pallets, showed him the warehouse and gave him a key. He also said that the next day the two of them departed from Larnaka airport to Athens.

It should be noted that the investigations ensured testimonies that the 56-year-old arrested and both wanted persons went to the warehouse on various dates. The investigations of YKAN Limassol are continuing and Interpol's assistance is expected to be requested in locating the two wanted persons.

As mentioned, YKAN is convinced that behind the case is a cocaine trafficking ring from Greece to Cyprus. In fact, it appears that the brains are recruiting Greeks so that they come to Cyprus to receive the consignments.
