A total of 6,452 extrajudicial complaints for various traffic offences, resulted from traffic police checks, from members of the Special Ulamos Motorcyclists (E.O.M.O), the Road Accident Prevention Ulamas (O.P.O.D) headquarters and Avdimos and members of the Traffic Police, on the motorways and the secondary road network nationwide, last week.
The Pancyprian traffic police checks were carried out between the hours of 6 a.m. on Sunday 15/05/22 and 6 a.m. today Sunday 22/05/2022, in the context of the prevention of road traffic collisions, the prevention and suppression of nuisance offences by cars and motorcycles and juvenile delinquency.
The majority of the complaints concerned offences, which are proven to be the main causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions.
Of these, 4,486 complaints were made for exceeding the speed limit and 199 complaints about driving without free hands (using a mobile phone) stand out.
Also worthy of mention are the complaints concerning traffic signal violations, offences for which the members of the Police made a total of 636 complaints, as well as the complaints about driving a motor vehicle without a valid registration certificate, which amounted to 248.
In addition, there were 315 complaints concerning failure to use a seat belt, parking in disabled parking lots and the violation of a traffic light.
There were also another 69 complaints about driving under the influence of alcohol and another 499 out-of-court complaints about various other traffic offences.
In addition, from last Sunday until this morning, 37 persons were identified by the members of the Traffic Police driving motor vehicles under the influence of drugs.
It is worth noting, however, that based on the annual reports of the Police:
In the year 2018, there were 17 fatal road collisions out of a total of 44, due to driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, with 19 dead out of a total of 49, as follows:

Moreover, in the year 2019 there were 12 fatal road collisions out of a total of 52, due to driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, with 12 dead out of a total of 52, as follows:
Alcohol: 5 dead
Alcohol and drugs: 1 dead
Drugs: 6 dead
In the year 2020 (year of the start of the pandemic) there were 11 fatal road collisions out of a total of 48, due to driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, with 11 dead out of a total of 48, as follows:
Alcohol: 7 dead
Alcohol and drugs: 1 dead
Drugs: 3 dead
Also, in the year 2021 there were 11 fatal road collisions out of a total of 44, due to driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, with 11 dead out of a total of 45, as follows:
Alcohol: 7 dead
Alcohol and drugs: 3 dead
Drugs: 1 dead
