 Filenews 8 April 2022

There are 86 people vaccinated with the new protein vaccine of Novavax, which is circulating under the name Nuvaxovid, the Deputy Director of the Nursing Services of the Ministry of Health, Evagoras Tambouris, told CNA, who noted that 26 citizens have scheduled appointments for vaccination in the coming period with this vaccine.

According to Evagoras Tambouris, 60 citizens received the first dose with Nuvaxovid, while 26 received the second dose.

He noted that the first vaccinations were done on March 12, 2022, to add that 14 vaccinations were carried out on that day.

Vaccination rates in adults and the general population

Asked about the vaccination rates to date, the Deputy Director of Nursing Services told CNA that the percentage of fully vaccinated adults is 86.6%, while he noted that for the general population the percentage is at 74%.

More specifically, he said that with the 1st dose 666,011 people have been vaccinated, with the 2nd dose 642,862, with the 3rd dose 464,397, while with the 4th dose 2,591.

What is nuvaxovid vaccine

Nuvaxovid is a vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in people aged 18 years and older. It contains a version of a protein, found on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (spike protein), which has been produced in the laboratory.

This vaccine will be administered in doses, with an interval of 3 weeks, while according to the studies conducted the effectiveness of the Nuvaxovid vaccine corresponds to about 90%.

The Nuvaxovid vaccine works by preparing the body to defend itself against COVID-19 infection. It also contains an "adjuvant", a substance that helps to strengthen immune responses to the vaccine.

It is noted that if the vaccinated person comes into contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the immune system will recognize the spike protein in the virus and will be ready to attack.

Antibodies and immune cells can protect against COVID-19 by working together to kill the virus, prevent it from entering the body's cells, and destroy infected cells.

This preparation concerns only the basic vaccination (first and second doses) and not the booster doses.
