 Filenews 24 April 2022

By the end of the year, the completion of the new Dialysis Unit of Paphos General Hospital is expected to be completed, which is being built next to the hospital's chapel and is an extension of the state hospital, according to Dr. Lakis Yioukkas, Director of the Nephrology Clinic of Pafos Hospital.

Dr.. Yioukkas noted that the construction of the new Dialysis Unit of Pafos General Hospital is based on European standards and has the capacity to develop up to 25 dialysis stations depending on the needs of the Pafos District. In addition, he said, from the normal Dialysis Unit, the new Unit will have a separate Dialysis Unit for seropositive patients (Hepatitis B carriers), the so-called yellow unit which today, as he said, they do not have, and patients from Paphos go three times a week to Nicosia and undergo dialysis.

In addition, he mentioned that care was taken for the construction of a separate Unit for infectious diseases such as Covid- 19. The building, he said, will house the outpatient nephrology clinics, will have a Short Hospitalization Unit, will have a ward for minor operations and there will be a ward for peritoneal dialysis which is another type of treatment for the restoration of renal function. The needs of the Pafos District with this Unit are secured for at least 15 years based on the planning made.

Indicatively, he said that on the ground floor of the building there will be a comfortable reception and registration area for patients, examination rooms/clinics, four short-term hospitalization dialysis stations, two dialysis stations for people with infectious diseases (Yellow Unit) with a separate discreet entrance, the staff locker rooms and auxiliary spaces. Moreover, he continued, on the first floor there will be 25 nursing stations, the changing rooms and a living room for the patients and auxiliary spaces, while on the second floor there will be a rest room for the on-call doctor and other areas. The entire building is designed for easy access for people with disabilities concluded. The aim of the Project, he continued, which had been announced by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, is to solve the chronic problems faced by the dialysis patients of the Pafos District and it is expected that this project will eliminate the suffering to which the suffering citizens are subjected.

Asked about this, Dr. Yukkas said that at the moment the Dialysis Unit of Paphos General Hospital serves 60 patients who undergo dialysis three times a week. At the heart of the design of the new Unit, he added, is the provision to patients of high quality hospitalization, in a modern and well-studied in all respects, environment.

In addition, Dr. Yukkas said the main cause of kidney failure is diabetes mellitus, which has now become a pandemic. He also said that half of the patients on dialysis are diabetics. He also added that the second cause is hypertension, which also damages the kidneys and the third cause is heredity. He then referred to the cystic medullary disease of the kidneys, which is, as he said, a hereditary disease that is observed only in Paphos.
