PAPHOS AIRPORT - THE GPS OF DESPAIR

Filenews 14 April 2022 - by Dora Christodoulou

The problem with the incorrect data provided by GPS for access to Paphos airport is taking on dimensions, since now, in addition to the motorists who complain about the wrong data they receive, reactions have been expressed in recent days by owners of agricultural clergy on the perimeter of the airport who see dozens of cars literally entering their plantations every day.

The problem has existed for several months, since it was found that the GPS records an existing road on the back side of the airport, by Acheleia, which, while showing that it is the shortest access to the airport, actually ends at the fenced off area from which there is no access to the passenger buildings.

As a result of this situation, airport officials said, as well as landowners in the area, the farmers' fields around Paphos International Airport, show an unexpectedly high traffic on a daily basis. The reason for the unprecedented daily coming and going of dozens of rental cars, as has been confirmed after the many reports to rental companies and other Paphos agencies, is the data contained in these road aids and which record a small rural road from the old Limassol-Paphos road, at Acheleia, as the shortest access route to the airport. In reality, however, this road only serves for the movement of farmers who cultivate the vast areas surrounding the airport and not the airport itself, since on this side of the airport there is neither an entrance nor an exit.

As a result, on days when there is increased air traffic at the airport, traffic jams are recorded in the fields on the north side of the unit, with rental vehicles remaining in front of the fence, with drivers trying to realize what is happening and then through reverse speeds and manoeuvring in the fields to return down the rural alley that will take them to the main road to Timi and from there on the airport avenue.

This situation is now before the competent authorities who are trying to resolve the problem in cooperation with the developers of the relevant aids with which the newest cars are equipped.
