Filenews 8 April 2022 - by Michalis Hadjivasilis

Three cases which are recorded in the conclusion of the Nicolatou Committee and investigated by the Police, have recently been forwarded to the Legal Service, following the completion of the investigations.

These are cases from a long list of about 100 cases that are being investigated by the Police in total in relation to the naturalizations of foreign investors and for which a problem seems to arise with the procedures followed. As we are informed by the Police, the investigations by the special teams that have been set up are in full swing and despite the thorough examinations, due to their complexity, their investigation and completion is delayed.

The files of the three cases that have been completed were forwarded to the Legal Service for study and instructions, with the Police recommending the criminal prosecution of persons in all three cases. The case of the Al Jazeera network revelations involving some five people is also in the Legal Service. Decisions on this case are expected later this month. As also mentioned in "F", a case has already been registered in the Court in Larnaca concerning a case of naturalization that was recorded in the conclusion of the Kalogirou Committee, while a second case from the same finding concerning a case of naturalization in Paphos, while it is at an advanced stage, however, things have been complicated in legal proceedings in the Supreme Court with the violation of the decrees for the disclosure of telecommunications data.

The fact that the special teams at the ICF Police Headquarters are investigating more than 100 naturalization cases, shows the amount of work that needs to be done in order to reach a conclusion.

In the meantime, a meeting of all those involved under the Chief of Police is expected to take place next week, in order to inform the leadership of the Corps about the whereabouts are and what cases are at an advanced stage. Then, according to the same information, a meeting will be convened in the Legal Service in order to update the data available in a special table with the serious cases, which has been drawn up there.

It is noted that apart from the cases of naturalizations resulting from the relevant findings, the cases concerning Co-operation are also investigated. Some of them were investigated by the local ICF and registered in the courts and others are being examined by the Police Headquarters.
