Special operational action plans have been drawn up by all police departments throughout Holy Week, Police Spokesman Christos Andreou said.
Asked about the measures taken by the Police in view of Easter, as well as about the issue of lampratzies [bonfires] and the use of firecrackers, Mr. Andreou said that special operational action plans have been drawn up by all police departments throughout holy week.
"There will be an increased police presence in places where there is increased activity in the form that there are labratzias, use of firecrackers," he added.
Mr. Andreou said that every day the Police identify and arrest persons, in whose possession quantities of firecrackers are found.
"What we recommend and tell people every day is that parents exercise more control over their children since they are mostly found young persons, minors, to use such illegal and dangerous objects in late hours as well," he said.
When these dangerous objects (SM crackers) are in the hands of minors, he said, "there is a risk of bodily harm both to them and to the other persons who are close to them," noting that "we have seen in the past they are injured with the use of firecrackers with amputations and other more serious injuries."
In addition, Mr. Andreou said that measures are being taken regarding issues related to the prevention of property offences, such as burglaries and thefts, as well as the Police are proceeding with traffic controls throughout the road network.
"Also, there will be an even more intense police presence on the roads in terms of traffic controls in the coming days both on the motorways and on the secondary road network and in the urban network," he added.
He also said that the Chief of Police himself, in this morning's teleconference, gave instructions to the Police Directors of the Provinces, to intensify their efforts and there is an increased presence of police officers on the streets.
The Police, Mr. Andreou continued, wish a Happy Easter to the whole world. "Bloodless celebrations. To drive wisely, so that we can enjoy without injuries and without traffic collisions all these Holy Days", he concluded.
