HIGH LEVELS OF DUST AND FORECAST FOR COMING DAYS

 Filenews 18 April 2022

Increased dust levels will still prevail in Cyprus today. According to the Department of Meteorology, the dust will gradually subside from tomorrow Tuesday while the temperature will drop significantly to be close to the average climatic values.

Detailed weather report

Weak low pressure affects the area. The atmosphere will see dust, whose concentrations will periodically be elevated, and a gradual decline is expected from Tuesday.

Today the weather will be mainly cloudy by medium and high clouds, while initially it is likely that there will be isolated light rains mainly in the mountains. Winds will initially blow northeast to southeast and locally southwest, to gradually become mainly southwest to northwest, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 and transient locally to strong 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will generally be a little turbulent and locally up to turbulent. The temperature will rise to around 29 degrees in the interior, around 28 degrees in the south coast around 26 degrees in the rest of the coast and around 25 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight the weather will be mostly cloudy with medium and high clouds. Winds will blow mainly westerly to northwest, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 and locally to the southwest to strong 5 Beaufort. The sea will generally be a little turbulent. The temperature will drop to around 15 degrees in the interior, south and east coasts, around 16 degrees in the rest of the coast and around 10 degrees in the higher mountains.

On Tuesday temporarily increased clouds are expected to give isolated rains. On Wednesday and Thursday the weather will be mostly clear.

The temperature will drop significantly on Tuesday and not significantly change by Thursday to hover near the average climatic values.

High dust concentrations are observed today, April 18, 2022, in the atmosphere according to the measurements of the ground stations of the Air Quality Monitoring Network of the Department of Labour Inspection.

Because the powder contains small amounts of inhalable particles that may have a negative effect on human health, the public and especially vulnerable population groups (children, the elderly and the sick) are urged to avoid circulating in open spaces until the phenomenon is over.

Employers must take appropriate organizational and/or technical measures after assessing the risks to their employees who are in open spaces and employees in such areas are advised to use appropriate means of personal protection.

For information, the hourly dust concentration values measured at 7:00 a.m. in the following areas were:

Nicosia: 56,6 μg/m3

Limassol: 81,3 μg/m3

Larnaca: 46,6 μg/m3

Paralimni: 50,9 μg/m3

Paphos: 80,3 μg/m3

Weighing: 34,4 μg/m3

Agia Marina Xyliatou: 93,8 μg/m3

Note that "dust" means inhalable suspended particles in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10). According to the relevant legislation, the limit value refers to the average daily value and must not exceed the value of 50 μg/m3 (micrograms per cubic meter).

More information and continuous, direct information on the results of the hourly measurements can be found on the website www.airquality.gov.cy and in the ''Air Quality Cyprus'' application, which can be installed free of charge on a mobile phone.
