EXPLOSION AT BANK ATM IN PAPHOS

Filenews 25 April 2022 - by Dora Christodoulou

A powerful explosion lifted the area next to Ellados Avenue in the centre of Paphos on Easter Sunday night. It was subsequently found that the explosion was due to a powerful explosive device that was placed at the ATM of a bank branch operating on Ellados Avenue.

The perpetrators, however, were unable to obtain any money, since although the explosion caused extensive damage to the site, it was not able to destroy the mechanism in which the money is stored. The scene was cordoned off by the Police and investigations began immediately to establish the identity of the perpetrators, given that both the bank branch and many other businesses on this central road and commercial axis of the city have closed circuit surveillance.

The authorities are also considering the possibility that the perpetrators wanted to hide behind the custom of firecrackers of those days, possibly hoping that the explosion at the bank would be perceived as another fireball of a firecracker in the adjacent temple of Apostle Paul and therefore would not cause mobilization.
