AUSPICIOUS FUTURE FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF KOURION [the new Municipality of West Limassol based in Ypsonas]

Filenews 4 April 2022 - by Ioanna Mantzipa

Large developments and huge industries are expected to be created in the near future in the new Municipality of West Limassol based in Ypsonas, which will now consist of Ypsonas and the communities of Akrotiri, Asomatos, Episkopi, Erimi, Kantou, Kolossi, Sotira and Trachoni. The new municipality will have much more to offer than it does today as the growth recorded in the area is rapid. Apart from the descent of large industries and the new jobs that will be opened, the municipality will also be developed in residential units since, as it is known, the prices of land sale in the area of Western Limassol are much more affordable than the rest of the city.

Speaking to "F", the Mayor of Ypsonas, Pantelis Georgiou, revealed that the new municipality will bear the name Municipality of Kourion, wanting, as he said, to continue the history of the Kingdom of Kourion, which started from the area of Episkopi and ended up to Ypsonas. "The new municipality will now be called, Municipality of Kourion. After informal conferences that took place between the communes and me, about two weeks ago, we came up with and decided on this name. "We expect the official meeting of the Joint Affairs Management Council to take place, where we will send the minutes with the change of name to the Ministry of Interior and thus officially integrate the new municipality, as the Municipality of Kourion."

The area is expected to develop industrially with the descent of huge investments in the industrial zones of Ypsonas. The new municipality, as the mayor said, brings with it a multifaceted development with a terrible demand for industries. "There are already units in the works for licensing by foreign investors, mainly Lebanon, and we believe that there will be a similar move by other Middle Eastern countries in which there is no stability."

It is, as Mr Georgiou said, a bottling plant for juice and wine, the licensing of which is at a very advanced stage. In the first phase, it will bottle 3,000 containers a year, with the potential to expand to 10,000 per year. The area purchased by the investor reaches 40,000 square meters, and the cost is expected to exceed 8 million. euro. Also, this investor bought residential land where he will build houses, for staff that will arrive from abroad and will settle in Ypsonas.

The descent of the second largest shipping company in the world is expected in the region. It's going to settle as he said. Mr. Georgiou, its headquarters in Ypsonas, on Elias Kannaourou Street. "It is already in the licensing stage. The application for planning permission had been filed and is in the final stages of examination. This is a project that will exceed €12 million and is expected to bring more than 200 employees to the region. These kinds of developments will drastically change the required number of housing units in the area", noted mayor Ypsonas.

Another company which is expected to be installed in the next famous, is the second largest pharmaceutical industry in Greece which comes to the third industrial zone, to function as a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit and whose piece of land has already been granted the piece of land to which it will be made.

Now the concrete plants that are now located within the British Bases in the industrial zone in Vati are also being moved. Furthermore, the construction of a road network is expected in the area where units of this size and nuisance will be installed. At the same time, the new industrial of Kokkinokampos will be put into operation for lighter intrusive factories.

As far as the rest of the areas are concerned, such as the area of Asomatos, consultations are already progressing on the licensing of golf and a series of large residential developments from villas and luxury apartments that will also serve the casino. The same happens in the area of Trachoni where investors have bought land that is promoted for residential developments.

Important developments are recorded, however, in the area of Erimi and Kolossi which mainly concern residential units. "Due to the increase in rent and land prices, these areas have available land that is at acceptable levels to build young couples," Mr. Georgiou said.

In the hands of the new municipality the largest area of Lady's Mile

With the reform of the municipalities, now administratively the largest area of the Lady's Mile area belongs to the Municipality of Kourion. According to Mr. Georgiou, the area up to the 2nd restaurant belongs to the Limassol Municipality, while from the third to the 6th restaurant belongs to the new municipality.

Asked to take a position on the redevelopment project of the Lady's Mile area, where the Limassol Municipality undertook, through a private designer, to prepare a study for the construction works, so that the project is ready to be tendered, Mr. Georgiou noted that an effort will be made for the two municipalities to jointly manage this project. "After communicating with the Mayor of Limassol, we have agreed within the next few days to see how we will manage this project together. As you can see, 2/3 of the area will belong to the Municipality of Kourion". Mr. Georgiou pointed out that their intentions are to coordinate between both municipalities so that there is a joint management of the contract. "We have no intention of cancelling any contracts, provided, however, that there will be the appropriate cooperation." He also stressed that they want to keep the environmental wealth and character of the area which should not be altered.

"We do not want a commercial development that will destroy the natural environment that exists, hence the consultations that will take place in the coming days. This will be the road map of the meeting. We will examine if there is such an intention from the Limassol Municipality and if there is one, then our recommendation is for everyone to bear the cost they are entitled to based on the length of the road network that will be made", he concluded.
