ATTACKS, FIRES AND MOLOTOV COCKTAILS ON THE EVENING OF HOLY SATURDAY

During the night, Police and Fire Brigade were called on many occasions to extinguish fires and examine scenes causing malicious damage.

Around 8.45pm a fire broke out in a vehicle, which was immobilized in the area of the Old Hospital of Nicosia. The fire was extinguished by members of the Fire Brigade after it completely destroyed the vehicle. The causes of the fire are expected to be determined by the examinations that will take place this morning.

In paphos district, around 9.20p.m. a fire broke out in a car owned by a 21-year-old man, which was parked on a street in the village of Emba. The fire extinguished by members of the Fire Brigade, caused extensive damage to the vehicle. The causes of the fire are expected to be established by today's examinations.

A few hours ago, around 8.20pm, in Limassol, there was an explosion that caused damage to the windscreen of a car, owned by a 51-year-old man. During the above time the vehicle was parked on a road in Kato Polemidia. Examinations at the scene found that the explosion was due to the firing of a factory firecracker, which was placed on the windscreen of the vehicle.

Last night there were also attacks on firefighters and police officers in an attempt to extinguish fires.

Specifically, members of the Fire Brigade reported to the Police, that around 1.00am. today, while they were heading to an area of Limassol to extinguish a fire, they were petrified by unknown persons, resulting in damage to the front windscreen of the fire truck.

In Nicosia district, around 1.30am members of the Fire Brigade were called to extinguish a fire that spread to dry grasses, from the lighting of a lampratzia. At the scene, firefighters were attacked by unknown persons, who were throwing stones, various objects and "Molotov cocktails" at them. Members of the Police intervened at the scene and fled the strangers.

In addition to the above incidents, the Police during last night responded to a number of other incidents reported by citizens regarding lighting fires, throwing firecrackers and causing nuisance.
