Archbishop Chrysostomos called the Russian invasion of Ukraine “unjustified” and said the scenes the world witnesses every day cannot be explained in any way.
Speaking to state broadcaster CyBC on Tuesday, the Archbishop called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to desist and show compassion for the people of Ukraine.
“It makes no sense whatsoever to just invade a country from one day to the other,” he said. “I don’t know if the man is well. What is he capable of doing? Will he start a nuclear war?
“But, most importantly, what did the Ukrainians do to Russia for Putin to feel like he can wage a war against them? It’s all very sad and we stand besides Ukraine,” he said.
Chrysostomos added that, although all wars should be avoided, he can understand a country taking up arms to defend itself from an unprovoked attack.
“I can understand a defensive war, one in which people stand up to defend their country,” he said.
“However, this is exactly the opposite of what Putin is doing. It’s simply inconceivable.
“Judging his actions in the past months, the Russian President is definitely not behaving like a Christian, as he claims to be,” the archbishop concluded.
