In the heart of spring, the violinist and Concertmaster of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Wolfgang Schroeder and the young talented cellist Robertas Grod invite you to an evening concert where they will present two violin and cello sonatas by Maurice Ravel and Zoltan Kodaly. The concert will take place at the Markideion Theatre in Paphos, on Tuesday, 19th of April 2022, at 7pm.

The Sonata for violin & cello M.73 by M. Ravel, with lean and simple aesthetic elements was dedicated to Claude Debussy. In this sonata Ravel enriches the dissonances and virtuosic parts with Hungarian folk melodies and characteristics of Kodaly’s and Bartok’s music and the harmonic charm of Debussy.

Z. Kodaly as a Hungarian native composer, ethnomusicologist and teacher, contributed to the evolution of a modern national art music rooted in authentic folk materials alloyed with the principles and aesthetics of the classical tradition. Kodaly’s Sonata for violin & cello, op. 7 is a blossom of Hungarian folk materials and colourful modes..

A few words about the musicians

Wolfgang Schroeder studied at the International Menuhin Music Academy, the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Mannes Collage of Music in New York. His teachers were Ana Chumachenco, Alberto Lysy, Sandor Vegh and Aaron Rosand. As soloist and chamber player, Wolfgang Schroeder has performed in prestigious concert Halls such as the Philharmonic in Berlin, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Vienna Konzerthaus, at the Great Performers Series at the Lincoln Centre and the Frick Collection Museum in New York, at London’s Barbican Hall, the Megaron Music Hall of Athens and at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. As a member of the Trio Parnassus, he received the prestigious Echo Classic prize for the best chamber music recording of the year. He was artistic director of both European Union Chamber Orchestra and Camerata Stuttgart. The other ensemble which gained international reputation is the “Belcanto Strings”, of whom Wolfgang Schroeder was a founding member. Schroeder’s discography is extensive. He recorded for MDG Thorofon and other important labels. He released the Complete Sonatas for Violin by Eugene Ysaye for Hook Records in 2016. Since 2005, in conjunction with an active performing career he is Concertmaster of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and Director Founder of Cultural Crossroads.

Robertas Grod was born in 1991 in Lithuania. Started cello lessons at the age of six. He studied in Vilnius Balys Dvarionas Music School in the class of J. Veiveriene. He is laureate Prize Winner of national competitions such as the „B. Dvarionas“ and the „J. Urba“. In 2010 he entered Moscow State Concervatory in the class of Prof. N. Shakhovskaya. In 2012 he won the 1st prize at Kozolupov International Cello Competition in Moscow. In 2016 he graduated the conservatory with honours and since then he lives and works in Cyprus. Robertas often gives recitals across Cyprus and Lithuania, participating in national festivals.
