RUSSIA CALLS FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY SECURITY COUNCIL ON 'BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS'

Diplomats said the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting today, at Russia's request, to discuss the development of "biological weapons" on behalf of the US in laboratories in Ukraine denounced by Moscow.

But Washington has called the request "ridiculous", saying for days that it is Russian forces that are preparing to use chemical or biological weapons in the ongoing war.

Dmitry Polanski, the Russian Federation's first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said via Twitter that the Russian mission asked for a meeting to be convened today "to discuss U.S. military biological activities on The Territory of Ukraine."

The Russian Ministry of Defence claims that there was a network of biological weapons research and development laboratories operating on behalf of the US Pentagon. The claim has been repeatedly refuted.

Washington in turn argues that "propaganda" by Moscow about Kiev's development of weapons of mass destruction is a pretext for justifying the invasion and for the use of such weapons by the Russian armed forces. Russia reiterated again "its false claims" and "we have seen how China adopts this propaganda", thus "we will be vigilant against the possibility that Russia may use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine or conduct an operation to load their use on the other side", the US deputy ambassador to the United Nations told the German Agency, Jeffrey Prescott, echoing statements by representatives of the U.S. presidency and U.S. diplomacy.

According to Mr. Prescott, the use of chemical weapons by Russia, to assassinate and poison political opponents of President Vladimir Putin on Russian territory and in that of Britain, is documented. The American diplomat also said Moscow supports "the Assad regime" in Syria, which has been repeatedly accused of using chemical weapons.
