Most of you will know that, post-Brexit, the Cyprus Government has withdrawn our right to vote in local elections and followed this by verbally dismissing democratically elected UK expat council members. Requests for a full written justification for this have not been forthcoming, and regular reminders are issued to the relevant bodies in the hope that someone will finally respond.
Late last year, the Cyprus Government issued an edict extending the service of council members until May 2024. This was done as the local elections planned for December 2021 were cancelled due to the local government reorganisation. Sensibly, it was felt that it was not worthwhile to hold elections when people would be in place for only 2.5 years. Nothing has been seen to suggest that this edict excluded UK expat council members. Again, no explanation has been forthcoming as to why the situation changed and UK expat council members were verbally dismissed in January 2022.
Cypriots resident in the UK can vote and stand in local AND Government elections.
Thank you.
