From 2023, the American University of Beirut will operate in Paphos, announced at a press conference the Mayor of Paphos Phaedon Phaedonos, referring to a new era for the city. The investment for the new academic institution is in the order of €29 million, while construction works are expected to begin in June in the field of Carob Honeycomb, with the aim of integrating the first first-year students in September 2023.

The American University Of Beirut, said the Mayor of Paphos, will operate three fields of study, computer science, economy and business and Civil Engineering.

"The Municipality of Pafos signs next Thursday an agreement with the University to be granted the building complex of Carob Mills", he said, "while a piece of gravel of land just across the street will be used to build its facilities there".

Phaedon Phaedonos announced that next Friday at 7:00pm, at the Markideion Theatre, the agreement will be formalized in the presence of the President of the Republic, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State who will arrive in Cyprus for this purpose and other American officials.

"Then and within 30 days," he said, "the architectural plans will be submitted, which are already ready at a very advanced stage. The goal is that in the coming years the University will host two thousand students, operating according to American standards". The Municipality, he concluded, now creates a third pillar in the economy, that of academic education, beyond tourism and construction.
