LOW-PAID POLICE OFFICERS AND FIREFIGHTERS ARE SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS

 Filenews 23 March 2022

The security of the state was left to the pride and dignity of the Police - Firefighters, who exaggerate themselves in order to be able to cope with the daily challenges they encounter in the performance of their duties, the Independent Guild of Civil Servants of Cyprus said in a statement. With the Guild denouncing that the state machine seems to want to turn hundreds of low-paid police officers and firefighters into second-class workers and beggars.

The announcement in its entirety

Into second-class workers and beggars, the state machine seems to want to turn hundreds of low-paid police officers and firefighters, since despite the timetables publicly presented by their natural and political leadership, to solve the chronic problem of the incredible delay in the payment of overtime pay, as well as public commitments to  pay retroactive changes of scale, these were not respected, resulting again in the accumulation of unpaid overtime duties, from October 2021 and unpaid retrospectives from September 2020.

It is well known that the day-to-day operation of the Police and, by extension, the security of the state and the citizens, due to the lack of personnel in the Security Forces, are largely due to the overtime duties of the Police, which have increased, among other things, due to the influx of a large number of immigrants, the possibility of a terrorist attack, the increase in crime, the prevention and suppression of organized crime. the increased policing measures by citizens' protests as well as control for compliance with and implementation of the decrees of the measures against the coronavirus.

The continuous and unhindered provision of policing and security is literally in danger of being degraded, since voices are heard from the base of the Security Forces, for the non-expression of interest in participating in overtime duties, since they remain unpaid for a long time, without a timetable for the payment of the remuneration, as well as the physical and mental fatigue that occurs to the members participating in the overtime duties. The crucial question that needs to be answered by the state is, what if this intention is realized? Who will have to fill this huge gap that will be created?

The security of the state was left to the pride and dignity of the Police - Firefighters, who exaggerate themselves in order to be able to cope with the daily challenges they encounter in the performance of their duties. However, they are also people, members of this society, who have obligations, financial difficulties, loans and families that they have to meet.

The state must immediately find ways of paying all overtime and retroactive duties that are pending so far in the Security Forces and stop behaving like a private company, trying to extend the time of payment of its obligations, making a mockery of the low-paid employees, who only ask for the obvious from their employer.
