At around 8.00 last night, while members of Team "Z" of the Pafos Traffic Police were on a motorized patrol on Demokratias Avenue in Paphos, with an inspection through the automated vehicle registration plate identification system – ANPR - they found that a car in front was being driven without insurance coverage and called with a signal to the driver to stop for inspection.
Failing to stop, the driver developed speed and, violating traffic signals, he entered Pompeii Street where, under conditions under investigation, he crashed into a parked car, causing his vehicle to come to a standstill at the spot. Abandoning his vehicle, the driver fled on foot, but a member of Group "Z" stopped him on an adjacent road and proceeded to arrest him for the offences of driving a motor vehicle without insurance coverage, failure to comply with a police officer's signal, reckless and dangerous driving, disobedience to a police officer's instructions, and traffic signal violation. The suspect was driving the car and without a certificate of suitability for the vehicle – MOT – in force.
It was found that this is a 20-year-old man, in whose possession a quantity of cannabis weighing about 16 grams and precision scales with traces of cannabis were found in an investigation that followed, resulting in him being re-arrested for the offence of illegal drug possession.
The 20-year-old driver also underwent a preliminary drug test, with a positive result. He gave samples for a final laboratory test of driving under the influence of drugs.
The examinations are continued by the Pafos Traffic Police and the YKAN (Pafos District Unit).
