The problem of substance use by drivers in the Pafos district is taking on ever greater proportions. Three other drivers were spotted Monday night by police patrols driving with substance use, while also raising the concern of the authorities about the extent of the problem.
In one case, members of the Traffic Police while conducting checks on Eleftherias Avenue in Chloraka stopped for inspection a car driven by a 21-year-old, a permanent resident of Paphos. A preliminary drug detection test that was done to him found that he had drugs in his saliva. Then he gave an additional saliva sample which after it was sealed will be sent to the General Chemical State Laboratory for laboratory analysis. A search of his car did not identify anything else illegal.
In another case, a patrol stopped for inspection on Apostolou Pavlou Avenue in Kato Paphos a car driven by a 30-year-old permanent resident of Paphos. In an investigation that followed in his possession, a quantity of cannabis was found and at the same time he was arrested for the offence of illegal possession of a controlled drug, he was then taken to the Pafos Police Department where he was interrogated and reported that the drugs found are his own and he possessed them for his own use.
He was released from his detention after being charged in writing. Then, before he was released, he was given an alcohol test with zero indication and a preliminary examination of drugs and was found to have drugs in his saliva. He also gave an additional sample to be sent for scientific examinations. The 30-year-old's vehicle was transported and is being held in the Paphos Traffic Police.
Members of the Pafos Traffic Police also, on Alexandrou Papagou Avenue, stopped for inspection a car driven by a 24-year-old man who lives in Paphos. On a preliminary drug detection test, he tested positive and a second sample was taken to be sent for testing to the State General Chemical Laboratory. In a search of the car, nothing was found. The Pafos Traffic Police and YKAN Pafos are cooperating to investigate all three cases.
