AREAS WHERE ARTIFICIAL REEFS WILL BE BUILT

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works proceeded with the announcement of tenders for the construction of artificial reefs in the marine protected areas of Geroskipou, Larnaka and "Dasoudi" of Limassol and Paralimni and Ayia Napa, with a total budget for the three projects of €2.6 million.

More specifically, the main elements of the three Projects are summarized as follows:

1. Geroskipou Marine Protected Area:

Sea area of about 5,900,000 sq.m.

Area between the facilities of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation restaurant in Geroskipou and the Pafos International Airport channel (Ezousa river estuaries).

Part of the constructions is placed at a close distance and around the sunken  boat and east and west of the edge of the boat at distances of about 10-40 meters.

Creation of a new mooring point for boats that will visit the area.

The Project is co-funded by the Operational Programme "Sea 2014-2020" of the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus. The cost of the project is estimated at €546,000, including VAT. The Contract is expected to be signed next May and the duration of its execution is 12 months.

2. Marine protected areas of Larnaka and "Dasoudi" Limassol:

i) Larnaka MPP:

Construction of an artificial reef in the marine protected area of Larnaka located in the area of Oroklini and occupies 2,200,000 sq.m.

1,200 meters west of the administrative boundaries of the British Bases with the southern end being about 2,600 meters from the coast.

Part of the constructions is placed nearby and around the boat "Elpida" and the boat LEF1.

Creation of three mooring points for the boats that will visit the reef area.

ii) "Dasoudi" Limassol MP:

Construction of an artificial reef with an area of about 1,450,000 sq.m.

Space between the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the west with an extension of 1,000 meters to the east, before the premises of the restaurant of the Cyprus Tourism Organization in the area of "Dasoudi".

Part of the structures is placed nearby and around the sunken boat "Lady Thetis".

Creation of a mooring point for the boats that will be visiting the reef area.

The Project is co-funded by the Operational Programme "Sea 2014-2020" of the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus. The cost of the project is estimated at €1.23m, including VAT. The Contract is expected to be signed next May and the duration of its execution is 12 months.

3. Marine protected areas of Paralimni and Ayia Napa:

(i) Paralimni MPA:

Construction of an artificial reef covering 630,000 sq.m.

500 meters north of the existing Paralimni fishing shelter.

Part of the constructions is placed at a close distance and around the sunken boats "NEMESIS III" and "LIBERTY".

Creation of a mooring point for the boats that will be visiting the reef area.

(ii) Ayia Napa MPA:

Construction of an artificial reef occupying 1,850,000 sq.m.

1,700 meters west of the existing Ayia Napa fishing shelter.

Part of the constructions is placed nearby and around the lined boat "KERYNEIA"

The Project is co-funded by the Operational Programme "Sea 2014-2020" of the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus. The cost of the project is estimated at €770,000, including VAT. The Contract is expected to be signed next May and the duration of its execution is 12 months.

It is noted that the studies for all three Projects were carried out by the Marine Works Section of the Department of Public Works of the Ministry.
