YELLOW WEATHER WARNING

 Filenews 22 January 2022

A new yellow warning was issued by the Department of Meteorology. The warning is for strong thunderstorms and will be in effect from 18:00 this Saturday afternoon until 5:00 am Sunday.

Detailed weather report

The low barometric "Elpis" begins to affect the area from this afternoon and from Sunday cold air mass is expected.

Today the weather will be partly cloudy to gradually become mostly cloudy, while initially isolated rains are expected, without excluding the possibility of an isolated storm, mainly in the western half of the island, as well as snow locally in the higher mountains. From early afternoon onwards, local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected, initially from the west and south, while other areas will gradually be affected. From time to time the phenomena may be intense, while in the higher mountains snowfall is expected. The winds will blow southwest to west, initially weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, and locally moderate, 4 Beaufort, to soon become moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and transient on the windward coast to very strong, 6 Beaufort. The sea will be a little turbulent in the east and south and turbulent in the west and north. The temperature will rise to around 15 degrees in the interior, 14 degrees in the southwest coast, 16 degrees in the rest of the coast and around 4 degrees in the higher mountains. Locally in the higher mountains frost will be observed.

Tonight the weather will be mostly cloudy with local rains and isolated thunderstorms. Locally in the higher mountains there is expected to be snowfall. Locally the phenomena will be intense or prolonged while gradually until the morning they are quite limited. The winds will blow initially, southwest to west, strong, 5 Beaufort, and on the windward coast to very strong, 6 Beaufort. Later the winds will become mainly westerly to northwest, strong to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort and locally on the windward coast, very strong, 6 Beaufort. The sea will be undulating to the west and north and turbulent to the south and east, to become later generally undulating. The temperature will drop to around 9 degrees in the interior, around 12 degrees on the coast and around zero in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form.

On Sunday the weather will initially be partly cloudy with isolated rains mainly in the west, as well as snow in the higher mountains while soon the weather will become mostly clear. From the afternoon onwards, temporarily increased cloudiness is expected to give isolated rain and snow locally in the mountains. In the area will blow very strong, westerly to northwest winds, which gradually weaken from the afternoon onwards.

On Monday the weather will be mostly clear with temporarily increased cloudiness, likely to give isolated light rains and light snowfall locally in the highlands.

On Tuesday the weather will be unsettled with rain, local thunderstorms as well as snow in the highlands. Locally the phenomena will be intense and prolonged.

The temperature will drop significantly until Monday, and not significantly change on Tuesday, to hover on Monday and Tuesday noticeably below the average climatic values. The height of the snow in Troodos Square, at the time of issue of the bulletin, was 32 centimetres.
