WAR ZONE IN THE CENTRE OF PAPHOS FROM A FIGHT BETWEEN SYRIANS

Filenews 4 January 2022 - by Dora Christodoulou

For more than an hour dozens of Syrian residents of Paphos beat each other mercilessly, using knives,  clubs, various missiles and stones, in the city centre on Monday night.

The serious incidents, which all show that they erupted for a trivial reason and specifically for experiments between two Syrian teams for a football game in which they participated previously, have raised the alarm to the Police, which has so far made two arrests, while searching for many other people who participated in the fight.

Fearful residents of an area in the centre of Paphos saw for hours in public places and in the middle of streets dozens of foreigners chasing each other, being brutally beaten and causing damage to property until the Police intervened. An estimated 40 to 50 Syrians participated in the conflicts of unprecedented extent and brutality, who were in possession of sharp instruments and other objects that were used against others.

When the incidents ended with the appearance of the police, it was found that two of the participants in the conflict, aged 20 and 22, were seriously injured and were taken to Paphos Hospital. The 20-year-old also had to undergo surgery after doctors diagnosed a ruptured pneumothorax, while the 22-year-old has fractures and is hospitalized in the surgical ward.

In the early hours of the morning, the Police arrested two Syrians, aged 17 and 25, who were detained. Under questioning, the two refuse to cooperate with the authorities, while intensive investigations continue throughout the Paphos area to identify other people involved in the conflict.
