The Municipality of Pafos in a statement denounces the Ecclesiastical Committee of the Holy Church of St. George in Anavargos, which falls within the municipal boundaries of Pafos, for repeatedly refusing to accept the burial of citizens of Pafos, citing that the Cemetery is intended exclusively for the residents of a specific area.
After describing this position as illegal and morally unacceptable, the municipal authority announces that under these circumstances and exercising the powers conferred on it by the Cemeteries Law, it proceeds to the cleaning and preparation of the available area in which there is a possibility for the burial of hundreds of dead.
At the same time, the Municipality invites for the last time, as it mentions, the Diocese of Pafos and the Ecclesiastical Committee of the Holy Church of Agios Georgios Anavargos to consider the responsibilities they have towards every citizen, whether Christian or other, to be buried until the Municipality of Pafos finds a new space either for the expansion of the specific Cemetery in Anavargos, which is part of the area of the Municipality or at another point.
"The Municipality of Pafos, rejecting outdated mentalities and attitudes that damage the image of our religion and Church, is determined to exercise its role as the competent Local Authority responsibly and for the benefit of citizens living legally in its area", the statement concludes.
