SHOCK WAVE ARRIVED IN CYPRUS FROM THE TONGA VOLCANO

 Filenews 16 January 2022

The blast from the eruption of the Tonga volcano in the Pacific has reached Cyprus, said the Director of the Department of Meteorology, Kleanthis Nikolaidis.

Mr. Nikolaidis said that last night, at 22:00, there was a sharp change in the pressure field in the area of Cyprus, which was recorded by the automatic meteorological observation systems at both Larnaca Airport and Paphos Airport.

According to Kleanthis Nikolaidis at the moment the Department of Meteorology is in the process of examining the phenomenon.

It is noted that atmospheric pressure in Cyprus at 22:00 on Saturday suddenly rose by 1.5 points and immediately declined by 3.5 points, until it was balanced again.

As the Director of the Department of Meteorology said, "the atmospheric pressure in Cyprus was at 1,011 and in the space of a few minutes it rose to 1,012.5 and fell back sharply to 1,009".

"This abrupt change in pressure," he said, "is the imprint of the shock wave of the eruption of the underwater volcano in the area of Cyprus."
