Recognizing the need for further protection of stray animals, the Council of Ministers today approved a special Plan to support local government authorities (ATA) in order to develop appropriate regional premises for the temporary keeping of stray dogs. The proposed Plan aims at the financial support of collaborations between local authorities, in order to develop in each Province regional premises for the temporary keeping of stray dogs, in accordance with the requirements of the Protection and Welfare of Animals Regulations.
For the implementation of the Plan, the total expenditure will amount to €1,500,000 for the period 2022-2024. The operation of these premises will emphasize the effort to adopt stray dogs, while their minimum capacity will allow the effective management of stray animals at regional level.
The right to submit the planned application for participation in the Project will have ATA partnerships which should include, according to defined criteria, a minimum number of municipalities or communities in order to ensure the regional character of the premises and the charitable operation of the site. According to the Plan, the District Administrations will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the projects by the local authorities, while the Veterinary Services will be responsible for approving the specifications of the sites, to ensure that the requirements of the legislation on animal welfare are met.
