OFFENCES REDUCED DUE TO FIXED AND MOBILE CAMERAS

 Filenews 11 January 2022 - byMichalis Hadjivasilis

The complaints of cameras - fixed and mobile - have halved since the day they began to officially report drivers, with the Traffic Police saying that the compliance of drivers will also lead to a reduction in accidents.

In nine days of operation of the four mobile cameras, 5,222 drivers were reported, a number reduced by more than half, from the violations recorded when the system was running on a trial basis and only warnings were sent to drivers. The same seems to be the case with the four fixed cameras, which record about 100 complaints a day, compared to many more before.

As stated to "F" by the assistant head of the Traffic Department at the Police Headquarters and responsible for the photo-labelling system for the Police, Harris Evripidou, the compliance of the drivers shows on the one hand the usefulness of the camera measures and on the other the assessment that they will bring about a reduction of road collisions.

Mr. Evripidou made it clear that the aim is for drivers to comply with the Highway Code and not for complaints. He said that in the first days of operation of the cameras, about 1,200 driver offences per day were recorded from the four mobile cameras, and now these have been halved, which we want to continue. The first extrajudicial documents are expected to be sent in the next few days by registered mail and after the driver's details have been identified. As the traffic police officer clarified, the period of payment of the extrajudicial will start from the date of receipt and not from the day of the drivers' offence.

Meanwhile, from January 25 and for a period of six month, s begins the second phase of the system, where another 20 fixed cameras will have to be installed, plus another 16 mobile cameras will be available.  The Traffic Police readjusts the points where the fixed cameras will be installed, depending on the points where there is traffic anarchy, many illegalities are committed with a risk of lives and in general there is an increased risk of accidents and especially fatal accidents.

One of the points that have been identified and where fixed cameras will be placed, is in the lights next to the area of Enaerios in Limassol, where several illegalities occur, mainly by young drivers and it is difficult to stop them.
