A total of 28,414 positive cases of the coronavirus were recorded in the last 14 days, according to the latest data from the National Report.
Specifically:
As of January 3, 2022, 172,928 cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed in the Republic of Cyprus, with 647 deaths due to COVID-19 (COVID-19 mortality: 0.4%).
The cumulative 14-day incidence of COVID-19 (diagnosed 14-day cases per 100,000 inhabitants) is 3,199.8.
In the last 14 days (December 21, 2021 - January 03, 2022) 28,414 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded:
- The median age of COVID-19 cases was 28 years (Intraquartile range: 21 - 41 years), 52.3% concerns women (n= 13,523), 47.7% in men (n = 12,332), out of 25,855 cases (91%) with the relevant information available.
- Based on the epidemiological history, 3.6% (n=1,002) were cases with a recent travel history, while 96.4% (n=26,848) are cases of domestic transmission – out of 27,850 cases (98%) with the relevant information available.
On January 4, 2022, 218 people with COVID-19 (diagnosed until January 3) were hospitalized (based on registered data and including those discharged, transferred or deceased on that day). Their median age was 62 years (Intraquartile range: 48 – 71 years), with 55.6% (n = 120) being for men (from 216 people with available the relevant information) and 34.8% (n = 70) people from the Limassol district (out of 201 people with the relevant information available). In total, 59 (36%) people with COVID-19 who were hospitalized reported underlying diseases (out of 164 people with the relevant information available).
According to the registered data, on January 4, 2022, 36 people (diagnosed until January 3) were in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – 32 people (88.9%) were intubated. The median age of the Epidemiological data is subject to change due to the rapidly evolving situation of 3 COVID-19 patients in ICU was 64 years (Intraquartile range: 56- 70 years), while 25 cases (69.4%) concern men. Fourteen (41.2%) of people hospitalized in ICU reported underlying diseases (out of 34 people with the relevant information available).
In the last 14 days, 165,680 molecular tests (PCRs) have been performed (18,657.7 per 100,000 population) and 1,280,012 antigen rapid tests (144,145.5 per 100,000 population).
Epidemiological Data in the Republic of Cyprus
The analyses are based on laboratory-confirmed cases notified to the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health. As of January 3, 2022, 172,928 cases of COVID-19 have been laboratory diagnosed (Figure 1, 2 and 3).
In the last 14 days (December 21, 2021 - January 03, 2022) 28,414 cases of COVID-19 have been laboratory diagnosed. The cumulative 14-day incidence of COVID-19 (diagnosed 14-day cases per 100,000 inhabitants) 1, an indicator reflecting the rate of active COVID-19 cases in the population (prevalence of active disease) 2 , is 3,199.8 per 100,000 inhabitants (Figure 3).
Characteristics of confirmed cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in the last 14 days
Among the 28,414 cases of COVID-19 diagnosed as of December 21, 2021, 52.3% are in women (n= 13,523), 47.7% in men (n=12,332), out of 25,855 cases (91%) with the relevant information available. By age groups: 6,158 people aged 0-19 years (21.7%), 20,429 people aged 20-59 years (71.9%), 1,826 people aged 60 years and over (6.4%), out of 28,413 cases with the relevant information available.
Figure 4 shows the distribution of COVID-19 cases by age group and gender. The median age of all COVID-19 cases in the last 14 days is 28 years (Intraquartile range 21-41 years). The median age of adults (≥ 18 years) with COVID-19 is 31 years (Intraquartile range 24-44 years). The cumulative impact of 14 days (per 100,000 inhabitants), based on the age group, is shown in Figure A1 in the Annex.
Among the cases diagnosed in the last 14 days, of the 25,573 (90%) cases with available information, 11,974 (46.8%) had a place of residence in Nicosia district, 6,352 (24.8%) in Limassol district, 3,430 (13.4%) in Larnaca district, 2,103 (8.2%) in Paphos district, 1,695 (6.6%) in free Famagusta district and 19 (0.1%) abroad. Figure A2 in the annex shows the breakdown of cases by province.
Epidemiological history
In the last 14 days (21 December 2021 - 03 January 2022), of the 27,850 (98%) cases with available information, 3.6% (n=1,002) concerned cases with a recent travel history, while 96.4% (n=26,848) concerned domestic transmissions.
Clinical Features
In the last 14 days (December 21, 2021 - January 03, 2022), out of 26,425 cases (93%) with available information, 27.9% (n=7,382) did not reported any symptoms at diagnosis, while 72.1% (n=19,043) reported at least one symptom.
Underlying diseases
In the last 14 days (21 December 2021 - 03 January 2022), of the 26,033 cases (91.6%) with available information, 1,741 people with COVID-19 (6.7%) reported at least one underlying disease.
Deaths
Based on the registered data, among those diagnosed with COVID-19 as of January 3rd, 647 deaths were recorded (as of January 4, 2022), with covid-19 as the underlying cause (COVID-19 mortality: 0.4%). Covid-19 mortality per 100,000 population is 72.9. Men had 410 deaths (63.4%) and women 237 (36.6%). The median age of people with COVID-19 who died due to this disease was 77 years (Intraquartile range: 69-85 years). In the Limassol district, 222 (34.3%) deaths were reported, 202 (31.2%) in Nicosia district, 118 (18.2%) in Larnaca district, 58 (9%) in Paphos district, 38 (5.9%) in the district of free Famagusta and 9 deaths (1.4%) related to residence abroad or there was no information available for them. The median time from the date of sampling to the date of death from COVID-19 was 14 days (Intraquartile range: 8-23 days). The graph (Figure 5a) shows the number of deaths per day with covid-19 as the underlying cause.
Based on the registered data, among the people diagnosed with COVID-19 as of January 3rd, 741 deaths from all causes were reported by January 4, 2022 (mortality from all causes on diagnosed COVID-19 cases: 0.4%). Mortality (deaths from all causes in people with COVID-19 per 100,000 population) is 83.4. Men had 472 deaths (63.7%) and women 269 (36.3%). The median age of people with COVID-19 who died was 77 years (Intraquartile range: 69-85 years). In the Limassol district, 261 (35.2%) deaths were reported, 231 (31.2%) in Nicosia district, 133 (18%) in Larnaca district, 66 (8.9%) in Paphos district, 41 (5.5%) in free Famagusta district and 9 deaths (1.2%) related to residence abroad or no information was available.
The median time from the date of sampling to the date of death from each cause in people with COVID-19 was 14 days (Intraquartile range: 7-23 days). The graph (Figure 5b) shows the number of all deaths (from each cause) of people diagnosed with COVID-19.
Admissions to Hospitals and Intensive Care Units (ICU)
As of January 4, 2022, in total, 3.8% (n=6,583) of COVID19 cases received hospital treatment. The median age of hospitalized people is 60 years (Intraquartile range: 47-72 years). Excluding 8 (0.1%) cases without available information, hospital care was mainly for men (n=3,712, 56.5%). The median age of people who are still hospitalized (until January 4, 2022 and with a diagnosis until January 3, 2022, including those discharged, transferred or died on that day - n = 218) is 62 years (Intraquartile range: 48 – 71 years) and 55.6% (n =120) refers to men, from 126 people with available information. 34.8% (n=70 out of 201 cases with available information) concern patients from the Limassol district, while 59 out of 164 people with available information (36%) reported underlying diseases. The graph below (Figure 6a) shows the number of hospital admissions (first admission) per day.
Figure 6b shows the total number of hospitalized patients each day (excluding cases admitted to the ICU).
In total, 725 patients (11% of all hospitalized) were admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU4). The median age of people admitted to ICU was 66 years (Intraquartile range: 58-73 years). The patients in the ICU were mainly men (n=459, 63.3%). The median duration of stay in ICU (for all patients hospitalized in the ICU) is 12 days (Intraquartile range: 7-21 days). According to the registered data, as of January 4, 2022, 36 patients (diagnosed until January 3, 2022) were in ICU. The median age of these patients was 64 years (Intraquartile range: 56-70 years). 69.4% (n=25) of the cases concerned men. Fourteen (41.2%) of people hospitalized in ICU reported underlying diseases (out of 34 people with the relevant information available).
The number of patients currently in ICU, according to the registered data, per 100,000 inhabitants, is 4.1. Of the 725 patients admitted to the ICU, 692 (95.5%) were intubated and 32 (88.9%) are still intubated. The graph below shows COVID-19 patients in ICU (with or without intubation) (Figure 7).
Recovery
As of January 3rd, 2022, 85.6% (n=147,448) of COVID-19 cases have been released/recovered
