MANDATORY USE OF HELMETS FOR CYCLISTS ON ITS WAY

 Filenews 20 January 2022

In recent years, road accidents involving cyclists have been increasing, which could possibly be avoided by the use of a protective helmet. It is not a few times that the helmet could be a lifesaver for the protection of cyclists from serious injury or even death.

The Parliamentary Committee on Transport examined, among other things, the institutionalization of the offence of non-use of a protective helmet by the cyclist or by a person transferred to a special seat during their movement.

The law proposal submitted by the MP of DIKO Chryssis Pantelidis provide for an amendment of the Regulation of Bicycle Traffic Law, in order to make the use of a protective helmet mandatory, while on the other hand the violation of this obligation should be an offence.

In addition, according to the explanatory memorandum, the proposed regulation is imposed due to the lack in the Republic of Cyprus of an integrated and adequate network of cycle paths, which poses a greater risk to cyclists, who in most cases use the lanes of motor vehicles. Furthermore, in view of the government's announcement of a plan to provide incentives for the purchase of bicycles, with a view to encouraging their use, this proposal, always in accordance with the report, is becoming necessary.
