KOSTRIKIS - WE NEAR THE END OF THE CURRENT WAVE OF THE PANDEMIC

 Filenews 10 January 2022

We seem to be at the end of the current wave of the pandemic according to what professor of molecular physiology and genetics Leontios Kostrikis told Active and the show Agenda, since as he said, we are at the peak of epidemiological indicators. The virus's reproduction rates are close to 1 and are increasingly coming down, he said, and in the next couple of weeks this curve will go down further.

On his part, Mr. Kostrikis noted that the state should gradually begin to de-dramatize the situation with the pandemic, since the number of cases decreases and hospitals are not under increased pressure. It is a good opportunity, he said, for all together, collectively, the state, the health authorities, the scientists, to think about the virus endemic. It's, he said, a big decision. It is not an easy task.

At the same time, Mr. Kostrikis also referred to the study being carried out in his laboratory regarding Deltacron, explaining that it was an academic initiative by the University of Cyprus to the Ministry of Health, which adopted it for public health purposes. A competition followed, he said, and a specific company was selected by the Ministry of Health to conduct the sequences of samples, which in coordination of the Ministry of Health are collected from sample centres, hospitals, airports on a weekly basis and the sequencing is done with the latest generation technology. Subsequently, the final sequences he explained are sent to the laboratory of the University of Cyprus for thorough phylogenetic, phylogenetically and genetic analysis of the sequences and a weekly report is written to the Ministry of Health.

Mr. Kostrikis referred to the process of locating Deltacron, while he responded to the accusation of Professor Magiorkinis, from whom, as he said, since he knows personally, he would expect to ask him for the details of the study being conducted regarding Deltacron.
