Some citizens destroyed the beautiful Akamas, with the images coming from the area and specifically from the site of Aspros Potamos, not honoring anyone. The incident caused anger and frustration in the Pafos District Committee Of the Movement of Ecologists, with the Commission stating in a statement that some unscrupulous people are still getting rid of everything undisturbed.
The last rains showed once again the lack of environmental consciousness and the total presence of the State to manage cases like this, the Ecologists say. Talking about a serious environmental disaster "right next to the beach of Toxeftra (known as turtle nesting beach) tons of plastics and garbage went to the sea after the last rains. Although many days had passed, as much rubbish stuck in the mud and rocks, with the next rains the plastics will become food for the turtles."
With the Ecologists sounding the alarm that the longer the protection of the Akamas is delayed, the longer the illegalities and impunity continue, the more the environment will pay for it. Calling on all competent bodies (Pafos District Administration, Municipality of Peyia, Department of Fisheries) to assume their responsibilities.
This pollution does not come from the sea but from the land because many people are trying to shift the real responsibilities elsewhere. Moreover, the images are an irrefutable witness to what is the source of pollution in the area in question, the statement concludes.
