The 3rd lowest decrease in passenger flights among the Member States of the European Union was in December in Cyprus. According to data published by Eurostat, in December 2021, the number of passenger flights in the EU increased by 130% compared to the same period in 2020, although it still remains below the levels prevailing before the coronavirus pandemic.
Specifically, Cyprus is ranked 3rd lowest with a decrease of -9% (Croatia -6% and Greece -8%), with the Czech Republic and Austria recording the largest decrease with a percentage of -41%.
Overall, based on Eurostat data, compared to 2019, in 2021 the country that showed the most signs of recovery in terms of the number of passenger flights was Greece with -29%, with Cyprus and Luxembourg following with -38% and -39%, respectively. The fewest signs of recovery were recorded by Ireland with -64%, with Slovenia and the Czech Republic following with -62%.
The data presented by Eurostat are an encouraging development for our country, since it appears that Cyprus remains close to its goal of a gradual and full recovery to pre-pandemic levels.
Moreover, Cyprus recorded last year the second smallest decrease in terms of commercial flights between Member States compared to 2019, with Greece being in first place, having recorded a decrease of 29%, compared to pre-pandemic levels.
