Two MMAD patrol cars are taking over patrols in Chlorakas after the serious incidents, which unfolded last night in the area between groups of people living in an apartment complex in Chlorakas.
According to Police Spokesman Christos Andreou, members of the Force will patrol the area in the coming days to supervise it.
It should be remembered that in 2020, the Ministry of Interior, by decree, prohibited by decree the settlement of other foreigners in the area of Chlorakas. Since then, 10 operations have been carried out by the Police to check compliance with the decree and a total of 35 people have been arrested for violating it.
At the same time, the Prefect of Paphos, on 17/11/2021, issued a decree for the evacuation of the apartment building in which foreigners live because the building was considered unsuitable for accommodation. For the evacuation of the complex, a deadline of two months was given for the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare to find another place of residence for these people.
The first incidents that unfolded on Monday night seem to have started for a trivial reason that has to do with a football match, while other reports also mention drug trafficking. Both on Monday and last night, a large number of people took to the streets, attacked a house of a Syrian resident, and attacked the police forces who rushed to the area to enforce order, throwing stones and other objects at the members of the force.
Initially, four persons aged 17 and 25 who are under eight-day detention were arrested and two others aged 20 and 22 years old following an evaluation of witness material available to the Police.
Yesterday, members of the Paphos I.E. proceeded on the basis of court warrants to arrest two more persons. These are men aged 46 and 44 who have been detained to facilitate interrogations.
