AVAKAS GORGE CLOSED DUE TO WEATHER - BUT IMPROVED ACCESS REQUIRED

Filenews 31 December 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

It is one of the most important monuments of nature worldwide, with thousands of visitors from all parts of the world visiting it every year. The unique ecological value and rare natural beauty of the gorge of Avakas, on the peninsula of Akamas, came back into the news this winter season for the wrong reasons, since once again in times of intense rainfall it has been closed due to danger for visitors.

Despite almost every year's problems, stresses the commune of Arodes, Matthaios Stefanou, the competent authorities proceeded last year to a rudimentary project, which however cannot support the passage to and from the gorge in times of bad weather.

"Essentially, we are talking about an 'injection' made to the existing unsuitable road, so that visitors can go to the gorge by road, especially during the summer seasons when there is a lot of traffic," he stressed. "But the work as it has been done, does not withstand a bad weather, the state agencies should proceed to the more permanent construction of an access."

The President of the Community Authority of Arodes points out that the issue of creating an access road to the gorge dates back to the 1980s, on the basis of official documents available in the community offices. However, he complains, all these years the relevant state departments have only made promises.

The lack of access from Arodes and the north side of Akamas to the gorge of Avakas, clarifies the commune of Arodes, concerns the issue of traveling by car, since hiking through paths to the gorge is possible, however the distance is very long and is not a feasible option for the vast majority of visitors.
