2,587 NEW CASES, TWO DEATHS - Friday 28 January

Two deaths from COVID-19 were recorded today in Cyprus bringing the total number of deaths to 726, according to the Ministry of Health. At the same time, 2,587 (positivity rate: 2.35%) new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 248,941.

Also 208 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 68 are in serious condition. 76.45% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination. 20 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit. A total of 110,201 tests have been performed for the detection of the disease with the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

Today's results follow in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 2 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- A man, aged 74, who died at Larnaka General Hospital on January 27th.

- A man, aged 93, who died on January 28th at Nicosia General Hospital.

As a result, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 726, of which:

  • 452 men (62.3%), and
  • 274 women (37.7%).

The average age of the deceased from the disease is 76.2 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 208 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 68 are in serious condition or in conditions of PPE.

Of the 68 patients who are in serious condition, 30 are intubated, 3 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit off the ventilator and 35 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 110,201 diagnoses performed, 5,748 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 104,453 by the antigen rapid test method, 2,587 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 59 cases from 564 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 47 cases from 2,189 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 302 cases from 2,482 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 36 cases from 356 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1,371 cases from 49,512 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 769 cases from 54,941 samples examined by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health's program.
  • 3 cases from 157 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
