2,546 NEW CASES, THREE DEATHS - Tuesday 25 January

The Ministry of Health announces that today, January 25, 2022, three people have died from COVID-19, while 2,546 (positivity rate: 2.56%) are the new cases of the disease.

Specifically:

  • 3 deaths were announced from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 716.
  • 223 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 71 are in serious condition. 73.43% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
  • 25 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • A total of 99,308 tests have been performed for the detection of the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
  • 2,546 (positivity rate: 2.56%) new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 241,319.

Today's results follow in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 3 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- Woman, aged 86, who died on January 24 at Famagusta General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 85, who died on January 25 at Paphos General Hospital.

- A man, aged 88, who died on January 25th at the Limassol General Hospital.

As a result, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 716, of which:

  • 448 men (62.6%), and
  • 268 women (37.4%).

The average age of the deceased from the disease is 76.1 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 223 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 71 are in serious condition or in conditions of PPE.

Of the 71 patients who are in serious condition, 27 are intubated, 5 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit off the ventilator and 39 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 99,308 diagnoses performed, 6,465 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 92,843 by the antigen rapid test method, 2,546 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 105 cases from 543 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 70 cases from 2,286 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 341 cases from 3,175 samples were taken through private initiative.
  • 19 cases from 324 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 1,186 cases from 41,718 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 830 cases from 51,125 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health's program.

In addition, the following tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • 0 cases from 192 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
