YELLOW WARNING IN PLACE FOR HEAVY RAIN

A yellow warning from the Meteorological Service for heavy rains came into effect this morning at 05:00.

In particular, a combination of locally prolonged and transiently heavy rains is expected to affect the region intermittently. The total rainfall is likely to range locally between 55 and 80 millimetres in 24 hours.

The warning will be in effect until 16:00 in the afternoon on Friday.

In detail the weather

Barometric low located between Rhodes and Crete, is moving slowly to the south and will affect the area of Cyprus until Friday afternoon.

Today, the weather will be mostly cloudy, with intermittent rain and isolated thunderstorms. Locally the phenomena are expected to be prolonged or even intense. On the highest peaks of Troodos snow is expected. Winds will blow mainly east to southeast, weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, but windward to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will become a little turbulent.  The temperature will rise to around 16 degrees in the interior, around 17 degrees on the coast and around 6 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tonight, the weather will remain mostly cloudy, with intermittent rain and isolated thunderstorms. Locally the phenomena are expected to be prolonged or even intense. On the highest peaks of Troodos snow is expected. Winds will blow mainly east to southeast, moderate and locally strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. Locally, on the windward west and north coasts, they will blow temporarily to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be turbulent.. The temperature will drop to 9 degrees in the interior, around 14 degrees on the coast and 3 degrees in the higher mountains, where locally frost is expected to form.

On Friday, the weather will be mostly cloudy, with intermittent rain and isolated thunderstorms. Locally the phenomena are expected to be prolonged or even intense. On the highest peaks of Troodos snow is expected. By late afternoon a noticeable improvement in the weather is expected.

On New Year's Day, the weather will be mostly clear, but locally there will be increased cloudiness intermittently.

On Sunday the weather will initially be mostly clear, with locally increased cloudiness, but at noon and in the afternoon there may be isolated rains or even thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and south, as well as sleet on the highest peaks of Troodos.

The temperature will rise slightly on Friday and not significantly change over the weekend, to hover near or slightly above the average climatic values.

The height of the snow in Troodos Square, at the time of issue of the bulletin, was 17 cm.
