A cyclone, which will be created and will peak in Cyprus, will hit the area from late Saturday night until Monday. As the director of the Department of Meteorology, Kleanthis Nikolaidis, told "F", the low pressure system, named "Carmel", will deepen in our region. With it will bring strong to very strong southwest winds, prolonged and intense storms, snowfall in the higher mountains, while hail is not excluded. Due to the phenomena and the dangers that accompany them, the Service does not exclude the issuance, even, of an orange warning.
"The system will peak on Sunday", with many powerful phenomena, said Mr. Nikolaidis and added that "cyclogenesis (cyclone creation) is not something we often see, especially in such a long duration. It happens every two to three years." He also said that the Meteorological Service has warned fire, civil defence, police and competent bodies to be on standby. The name, Mr. Nikolaidis clarified, derives from a list that has been predetermined since last October with the Meteorological Services of Greece and Israel. The first two names on the list have already been exploited in other systems. Carmel, named after the Carmilian Mount Carmile in Judea and was proposed by Israel.
The weather today
Today periods of sunshine will alternate with cloudy weather, which is expected to give isolated rains and even thunderstorms. On the highest peaks of Troodos and locally on the higher mountains, transient snowfall is likely to occur. The temperature will be below the average values for the season, around 18 degrees Celsius. In a similar way tomorrow, periods of sunshine will alternate with cloudy weather, while isolated rains or thunderstorms are expected.
Prolonged winter conditions
At the same time, notes Mr. Nikolaidis, the World Meteorological Organization that provides advisory services, reported prolonged winter conditions for the Eastern Mediterranean region, in which Cyprus is located. According to this bulletin, for three weeks (until 4/1/2022) phenomena will prevail, which will give rain beyond normal levels. Interpreting the forecast, Mr. Nikolaidis explained that "if in December we record an average surface cumulative distribution of 100 millimetres, now we will have a little more".
