The opportunity to get to know beautiful and strange species of fish is now possible for those who visit the aquarium of the Zoo of Limassol. The mayor Nikos Nikolaidis, celebrated this morning the inauguration of the new aquarium that operates in the public garden of the city.
The aquarium has an area of 80sq.m and new mechanical filtration equipment, water quality, temperature, oxygenation and radiation control machines have been installed in it. The cost of its creation amounted to €350,000 euros, an amount that has been covered by donations from companies based in Limassol.
As the mayor Nikos Nikolaidis mentioned in his address, the aquarium hosts various species of fish, including small fish of the Amazon, "the choice of the subject and the fish was made in cooperation and the advisory guidance by ichthyologists of the Limassol Development Company and for the proper operation and maintenance of the aquarium, special training has been made to the staff of our zoo".
According to the mayor of Limassol, the opening of the Aquarium is part of the wider effort of the municipality to strengthen and upgrade the Zoo. As he said, the City Council, decided to add new animals (lemurs, ostriches and others), in the first phase, and these days the places where the animals will be placed are being prepared. The second phase of securing additional animals will follow immediately afterwards. Among other things, it is proposed to create a botanical garden, as well as a greenhouse of tropical plants, gardens and galleries with cacti and climbing plants, a linear inaccessible lake with goldfish, small artificial islands with plants and aquatic plants.
"The whole project, whose total cost will exceed €10 million, will be done gradually, and it is expected that each City Council will implement a part of the upgrade every year with the appropriate funds in each annual budget. The first intervention that will begin later this year will be an impressive upgrade of the playground that will be a very generous sponsorship of our fellow citizens, which will be announced in the coming days. A second action will follow concerning the lake on the east side of the main pedestrian street of the public garden", Nikos Nikolaidis said.
