Two people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 627, according to today's announcement by the Ministry of Health. At the same time, 917 (positivity rate: 0.81% new cases of COVID-19 disease were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 149,580.
63 new cases of Omikron have been identified.
Also 168 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 62 are in serious condition. 76.2% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination. 14 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit. A total of 112,532 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
Today's results are detailed.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 2 people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:
- A man, aged 91, who died on December 23rd in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- Woman, aged 91 years, who died on December 24 at the Limassol General Hospital
Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 627, of which:
- 400 men (63.8%), and
- 227 women (36.2%).
The average age of those voted by the disease is 75.9 years.
B. Hospitalized:
In total, 168 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 62 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.
Of the 62 patients who are in serious condition, 22 are intubated, 6 are hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 34 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):
Of the 112,532 diagnoses performed, 10,963 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 101,569 by the antigen rapid test, 917 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:
- 58 cases from 6,661 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
- 223 cases from 4,076 samples taken through a private initiative.
- 14 cases from 218 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
- 467 cases from 72,156 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 155 cases from 29,413 samples tested using the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
In addition, the following tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:
- 0 cases from 8 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
