63 NEW CASES OF OMICRON IDENTIFIED - 11/12 to 19/12

Cases of the Omikron variant in Cyprus are increasing. According to an announcement by the Ministry of Health in the context of the strict testing carried out in the Republic of Cyprus under the light of the new Omikron mutation, after the sequence of 192 samples of positive cases with collection dates from 11 December 2021 to 19 December 2021, carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, with the company NIPD.  Following the analysis of the data by the Laboratory of Molecular Vertology of the University of Cyprus, 59 positive samples were identified with the Omikron variant. In addition, another 4 samples were confirmed sequencing from the airports as Omikron, by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.


  • Of the 192 samples, 80 were collected at airports, 9 samples were received by residents of the Eden Rehabilitation Center, and 103 samples were collected by the community.

  • Specifically, 34 cases of the Omikron variant (B.1.1.529) involved samples collected at airports, 7 from Eden and 22 from the community.
