Caress penalties are imposed on police officers who are subject to disciplinary misconduct, which in some cases are also serious. As reported by police officers in "F", recently published in the weekly orders of the Police, sentences imposed on police officers who committed disciplinary misconduct. The highest penalty imposed was €50 even though the offending was quite serious.
In a case of a police officer accused of misconduct and offense or omission, in the first category a fine of €20 and in the second €30. According to the facts, the police officer in question secured the sum of €200 from a citizen after falsely stating that he can order and install a CCTV camera. He was also employed as a private guard in buildings being built, without obtaining permission from the Minister of Justice.
Another police officer went through the disciplinary procedure because while he was in the Complaints Office of the Zygi Police Station, he behaved indecently and / or rudely towards the station manager and illegally attacked him. He also used insulting and offensive language towards another member of the Police, who was on duty at the Station in question. For the charge of his misconduct, he was given the penalty of severe reprimand, as well as for the offence of oppressive behaviour as well as a fine of €50 for the offence of repressive behaviour.
In another case, a female police officer while off duty went to a pet store, where after causing damage worth €270 to the store's property, she then pushed, spat in the face and threatened the owner of the store in question. She faced charges of misconduct where she was given the penalty of severe reprimand, while for the double charge of illegal or unnecessary exercise of power she was fined €30 twice.
These sentences are not considered to be representative of the offences committed by the police, but, as we have been told, where it is found that uniformed people are involved in corruption cases, they are then expelled from the force. All 15 police officers who were involved in investigating the cases of missing women who had been victims of the serial killer will pass through a Disciplinary Committee. Now, the proceedings will be initiated against them and they will reportedly not admit the charges after gaps in the investigation system had been identified and why the investigators were suggesting others, who were eventually excluded.
