Particular attention is advised to the public by the Police, for protection from fraudulent phone calls made to citizens and aimed at extracting details of their bank accounts, as well as other personal information.
Recently, the Electronic Crime Subdivision has received several new reports of telephone fraud, where a number of citizens receive phone calls which appear to be made from telephone numbers in Cyprus that are however false. It is believed that phone calls are made from abroad and to hide the real telephone numbers of the perpetrators, non-existent telephone numbers resembling telephone numbers of Cyprus are used as a name.
The perpetrators in their conversation with citizens who answer the phone calls, mention the following in English "this is the National Police. This is to inform you that illegal activity has been recorded in relation to your identity. An international warrant has been issued for your arrest. For more information click "1".
Using this information of citizens and their bank accounts, the perpetrators of fraud are able to extract their personal details or even their bank accounts.
The Police recommend special attention to the public receiving these phone calls and not to report to any person via telephone communication, any bank account details and other personal data.
