With the aim of modernizing the electricity legislation, the Council of Ministers today approved the bill entitled: "The Electricity (Amendment) Law of 2021".
According to a written statement by the Deputy Government Spokesperson, Niovi Parisinou, this update was deemed necessary because the existing electricity legislation is obsolete and without substantial upgrading for decades.
As Mrs Parisinou points out, 'the modernisation of the legislation was deemed necessary in order to comply, among other things, with the European directives, the constantly changing environment in the electricity sector and the forthcoming operation of the competitive electricity market'.
It also says that "account was taken of the creation of new private power stations and electricity storage facilities, the need to modernise the licensing of professional electricians and lifelong learning, the need to integrate inspections of electrical installations as a competitive activity and the abolition of monopoly regimes, as well as the need for periodic inspection of existing activated electrical installations"."
