We are entering a new era, aiming at the creation of adequate infrastructure and the institutionalization of effective procedures for the rational management of waste, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Costas Kadis said today, promoting measures to reduce its production and increase its recycling and reuse rates.
In his address at the conference "Inform and join us in the circle..." taking place in the context of this year's European Waste Prevention Week, Mr. Kadis said that the workshop aims to present and highlight ways in which we can transition to a circular economy, making rational decisions on product selection and purchase and taking responsibility for the management of the waste we produce as a society.
The protection of the environment is one of the main objectives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, he said and by implementing the National Action Plan for the Circular Economy, the Ministry proceeds to the implementation of important projects and policies, such as the program "I pay as I throw", through the support of local authorities for the implementation of separate collection systems at source and separate collection of municipal waste, the programme for the prevention, separate collection and recovery of municipal waste in mountainous and semi-mountainous Cyprus, the programme for the reduction of municipal waste from beach hotels and other places of mass waste production and the financing of new investments in the field of waste treatment.
Projects and actions are also planned, such as the construction of repair and reuse centres, the creation of green recycling kiosks, the improvement and expansion of the Green Points network, as well as the promotion of household composting of organic waste.
The European Week for waste prevention, from 20-28 November, is an opportunity to inform, raise awareness and participate in activities aimed at reducing and rationally managing waste and protecting the environment, so as to change our way of thinking, change habits, for a more sustainable environment and a circular society, said Mr. Kadis.
