FIRE IN AKAMAS

 Filenews 1 November 2021

The fire that broke out this morning on the Akamas peninsula has taken on dimensions, according to the director of the Department of Forests, Charalambos Alexandrou. The winds, as he points out, make it difficult for the forces to work.

The fire broke out from a remote point in a ravine and due to the strong winds blowing in Paphos since the morning, as well as the dense vegetation, it spread very quickly.

The fire spread to the side of Neo Chorio and Prodromios due to the direction of the winds, a fact that according to the officials has eliminated the danger to the state forest, since the direction of the winds "pushes" the fiery front in the contrasting direction. The communities themselves are not at risk at this stage, since the mobilization of the authorities was immediate and massive.

A total of eight vehicles of the Fire Brigade and the Department of Forests are attempting to contain the fire, while the efforts are assisted by the two Kamov 32 firefighting helicopters, based at Paphos Airport, as well as the two planes of the Department of Forests.

The fiery front has not yet been brought under control, but it is believed that within the next few hours this will be done.

The new fire that broke out in Akamas raises great concerns to the authorities, since it is the umpteenth time that such a development has been observed in the space of just a few weeks in the region.
