Disastrous for the environment of the island and incompatible with the relevant requirements for the protected areas "NATURA 2000" is the planned creation of a military base in occupied Karpasia, says the Environmental Movement of Cyprus, noting that this decision "is a setback not only for the solution of the Cyprus problem but also for the protection of the environment of our common homeland".
According to an announcement of the Movement "Karpasia has been declared as a candidate for its declaration in a Natura 2000 area when it is possible to apply the European acquis to the entire island with the solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our people"
Also, "in the Karpasia area there are 10 important habitat types, such as sand dunes and invisible forests, while Karpasia is one of the areas used by sea turtles (Chelonia mydas and Caretta caretta) for spawning".
In addition, the area is home to the rare species of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus).
The Environmental Movement of Cyprus states that through its action and actions "it tries to contribute as much as possible to the protection of the environment of our country, but any action for the preservation and protection of the environment has no impact, if our common homeland is allowed to be completely led to the devastation of the partition of the environment and our people".
