In a vast wasteland they seem to have turned an open space in the area of Lakatameia, according to what the Movement of Ecologists - Citizens' Cooperation denounces.
As stated in a relevant announcement of the Movement, after a visit by the Municipal Councilor of Lakatamia of the Movement, Mr. Loizos Dimitriou, what was found beyond the vast wasteland, is the wreckage of an airplane that has remained there for about 54 years.
The plane crash incident had occurred in Lakatamia on April 20, 1967, and it is a tragedy that left 126 people dead, while only four people survived the crash.
In his statements, the Municipal Councilor of Lakatamia Loizos Demetriou states that: "As a Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation, we consider it unacceptable for so many years that debris from the plane crash remains in the area and the competent authorities for so long not to clean the area that has been turned into a "mountain" with garbage''.
''The entire planet is discussing the crisis of climate change and Cyprus does not do the obvious for the protection of the environment. We immediately call on both the Municipality of Lakatamia and other bodies to immediately take the necessary actions for the restoration of the area''.
